First video of Game Maker for PSP

Below is a video demonstrating Game Maker for PSP running a none-modified version of Chad Chisholm’s Skydiver.

There game is in a playable state but there are some problems with speed, a few graphical glitches and background music has not yet been implemented.

What do you think?

  1. Andrew McCluskey :I personally can see why they chose PSP first. It’s easier to port things (PSP has a layout which can mimick keyboard controls, it’s more powerful than iPhone so less modifications are needed for games) and, quite honestly, the iPhone is fairly oversaturated at the moment. Plenty of people have a PSP but PSN isn’t packed to the brim with hundreds of thousands of games like the iTunes store is. iPhone is certainly a viable market but I think their priorities are right.

I have no idea how hard it might be to get into the PSN, but the App Store is surely easy to get into as long as you don’t break Apple’s rules. The PSN has to have much higher quality standards, making the Game Maker to PSP port kinda pointless for most GM games.

  2. It’s great!
I have hope that games created with this won’t be homebrew, but legal PSP games.
It looks fantastic! I am looking forward for it.
If it wasn’t homebrew I would use GM more recently.
Sorry for mistakes, but I’m not English 😉

  3. Lol, it is kind of funny that they made a version for the PSP when the market YoYo should focus on is iPhone/iTouch/iPad, Android, and maybe Palm webOS, which are casual gaming devices. That is the direction Game Maker on portables should take.

Besides, I don’t even own a PSP. Heheh, that sucks for me 😛

    • NAL is right.

Also, the GM for Mac isn’t completed yet, and because you can only use the iPhone SDK on a mac they’d have to complete that first. And bug test it, release a few more versions etc. before they could add iPhone capability.

  4. Being a bit skeptical that this was real, i sent an email to Sandy for confirmation about it. He has indeed confirmed that the video is real. A formal announcement is expected soon.

  5. I am now motivated to finish my comp05 entry ;). Better start working (well, I’ll start again Saturday ….).

Thanks for the awesome post! If they can put Skydiver on the PSP, can they do it to any game that’s the right size and uses limited controls?

    • Exactly! There’s all this hype about PSP games, but unless you OWN a PSP, you won’t know that you CANNOT run homebrew games on your PSP. Sony disabled it because they didn’t want people pirating games through their USB cables and onto the PSP.

So you need a hacked PSP, with Custom Firmware (CFW) instead of Official Firmware (OFW). It’s kind of like jailbreaking an iPhone, except harder to do, but same in the sense that it voids any warranty, and is basically not supported… and can be very dangerous.

So I’d like to know how YoYo Games plans to implement PSP games.

  6. I’m pumped. All those noob posts on the GMC about GM games on consumer gaming devices don’t sound so ridiculous now.

  7. Does this mean that there will be a way to compile your gamemaker games to run on a psp (like an executable) or will there be a development tool specifically for the PSP. Whatever the case, it’s fantastic and seems like a reasonable transition with great value! How bout the xbox, ds, etc.? I teach game design and no that my students would be incredibly motivated to see their creations show up on another device.

    • I think it’s likely that they’ll be an export to PSP option on GM9 as he stressed the point that there were no changes to the game to make this work.

XBLA or iPhone seems the next most logical step, but with GM for Mac still having some issues (the iPhone SDK can only be run on MAcs, no PCs) XBLA seems like mroe of an obvious choice. I would like to see DS however.

  8. Haha, Sandy is a “n00b” (was that him in the video?). I am very glad that they are doing so well, and I hope that it gets finished soon!
