Just a quick update on progress with the Game Maker Affiliation Service provided by gamemakerblog.com
There are currently 6 banners in rotation, however only 4 users have placed their code on their site.
Thanks to Jason from GameMakerResource who reported a problem with sites opening in the GMA iframe instead of in a new window, this has now been fixed.

The ignorance of some members at the GMC never ceases to amaze me. In the past two days I have come across as many posts promoting websites which look terrible in Firefox based browsers. This alone is forgivable, just. But since the creators of these sites are fully aware that their site does not display correctly in Firefox and don’t seam to be prepared to do anything about it they are certainly loosing my custom (and respect if they had any in the first place).
I use K-Meleon, a light open-source browser based on the Gecko engine behind Mozilla. Based on my Google Analytics statistics less than a third of the visits to Game Maker Blog are by people using Internet Explorer or other similar browsers. Therefore these selfish game creators, one of which when told their site was incompatible with FireFox replied “you could just not use firefox…“, are therefore abandoning a large and increasing sector of surfers who are moving away from IE.
Comments such as “This site works best in Internet Explorer. Sorry…” aren’t going to win you any friendship from me. Even if you claim you don’t have Firefox this is no excuse. It takes a minute if that to download it free. Even if you have the delusion that IE is better and want to continue using it you should still check out how your site appears to those who have moved to FireFox.
Incidentally the most popular browser to view Gamemakerblog in over the past month is Firefox, followed by IE, Mozilla, Opera and Safari. The earlier IE compatibility problems were fixed after a few days.Read More »
It’s not often that I come across ‘decent’ games at the GMC. There are a lot of good efforts, but most releases leaving me wanting more – in a bad way. The number of games where the focus has all been on one aspect of the game is high. For example games with amazing unique graphics which are wasted on appalling gameplay.
Forted, a bunker defence game is an exception to this rule. This game has it all. A great idea, simple but adequate graphics, sound, easy gameplay and a number of features that appear later in the game to keep you playing. A highscore table makes the game addictive, as does the chance to choose how to upgrade your bunker.
Sure, this has all been seen before with the defend your castle game produced by xgenstudios, which interestingly I also compared Coffee Lover Proction’s trailer for Senseless War to, but the concept was good and Micco, the creator of Forted certainly hasn’t produced a rip-off of defend your castle.
You control the guns of a military bunker in an area of open grassland, you are attacked by various soldiers from either side and from bombers, fighters and helicopters from above. You have to work out how to best manage your resources which include when to reload, when to nuke and which upgrade option to choose after you have killed the next 100 soldiers.
Forted is an excellent example of the type of mini-games that can be produced with gamemaker and how a basic concept can quickly be built upon to build a more fulfilling and complete game.
No fancy 3D graphics or major soundtrack, and yes the game has its flaws – some of the text is a bit too small to read, and the colour changes of the sky are a bit dramatic – but an excellent and fun minigame! With a bit of tweaking here and there it could get my top rating. I’d give this game a 9/10, and I don’t even give out high ratings, or even any ratings often at all unless I think a game really deserves it.

Continuing my investigation my investigation into gamemaker made games that have YouTube trailers I came across Naruto: Ninja Way, a fighting game, released onto the GMC by Geou. The video doesn’t claim to be a trailer, but a demonstration of early A.I in the game.
But hey, there is sound. Trouble is I don’t know which character(s) are the AI and which (if any) are the gamer. The video has attracted 1,000+ views and a number of comments, mostly positive, although it appears I’m not the only one unsure about which characters are the AI.
Thankfully this member included a link back to the relevant topic at the GMC in the video description – something which all trailers should certainly utilise.

A good resource I came across recently was Simple Status, a website that can generate graphical status bars for those of you that insist on displaying the progress of development on your up-and-coming games in your forum signatures.
Much neater than the usual ||||||||||||||s I hope you’ll agree.
