This Is Indie

Evan McClane has relaunched his Independent Developer Magazine as “This is Indie”. Writing in the June 2010 issue he says “Independent Developer was a far cry from an amazing magazine, and This Is Indie hopes to become what
Independent Developer never was.”

In PDF format (left click only) the download is more than 40MB, so some compression of images is clearly needed, however there is also a considerably smaller ODT copy (left click only).  It is clear to see where the large file size comes from with all pages having a graphical background and lots of illustrations are included.

Invert and Xeno Fighters are reviewed, and there is a tutorial on creating a level editor for your game that stores levels in external text files. Also included is a review of the Hobby Press’ Game Maker tips book (which is bizarrely hyperlinked to Evan’s desktop) which gets 1 star.

It’s a good read but the file size definitely needs to be smaller.

What do you think?

  1. You know, when I made this I had no idea it was Game Jolt’s slogan. I was originally going to do I Am Indie, but that didn’t sound as good to me :P. I know there wasn’t too much content (volunteer writers are always needed – send me a PM on the GMC) and compression is needed. When the next issue comes out I hope to fix these problems. Thanks for the comments everyone!
EDIT: Also, I just realized that some hyperlinks aren’t working. I’m fixing this now and hopefully will have a new version up soon.

  2. WOW! All of the pages are images, there is no text. It looks awesome, but I think that is a really bad idea!!!!!!!!
Th reviews were nice and I may use the level editor tutorial at some time or another.

    Nice work!

  3. This is Indie is no where near a slogan. If anything its a cliche used by broke developers(game and music and websites). I am downloading now.I hope its worth the 10mb.lol

  4. Wow, I can’t believe how short the issue is considering the file size. Impressive production values for the most part but not without some problems here and there. Good first (second?) effort. I like to compare it to Independent Developer Magazine but it’s download link no longer works.
