This video isn’t intended as a Top 100, rather I wanted to show a cross section of the types of games that were built in Game Maker this year. The inclusions are based on my own opinions; I have no doubts that your own set of games will vary from my own. I made this video not only to reminisce about the games I included, but to encourage thought about the games I have missed.

However, there are some noticeable exclusions that won’t go unnoticed, namely Climb to the Top of the Castle, Cochone’s Pursuit and Save the Planet. I have decided not to include them in the video because they were still in a WIP stage at the end of 2009, so what we see now might not be indicative of the final product. I figure they can always go in next year’s video when they are finished!

There are many people I’d like to thank for helping me make this video. I’d like to thank CROS, KniteBlargh and all of the other GameJolt chat regulars who provided me with game suggestions when I was stuck. I’d like to thank HachQue from Roket Games for helping out when technology didn’t work, and to Rinkuhero for the stellar idea. I’d also like to thank all of the Game Maker Game hosting sites, all of the forums and blogs that keep us informed and all of the GM magazines and media outlets. Finding this many GM games would be impossible without these resources on hand. Finally, I’d like to thank all of the people who made a GM game this year, we all have hours of gaming goodness at our fingertips because of you.

In closing, I hope you enjoy the video! Have a happy holiday, and I hope you all continue to turn to the GameMaker Blog for all things GM in the New Year!

  2. Haha, I spent the entire duration of the video wondering “Am I going to be in it? Am I going to be in it??” and I must say, you kept me waiting until the laaaast minute.

…But anyway, as others have said, this was a great video and very well put together. It was nice to see work from all of my gamemaking friends here. Lots of very fun-to-watch games present. Here’s hoping 2010 brings just as plentiful a bounty!

  3. Thanks for the positive feedback everyone!
@NAL The recording was nothing special, just Camstudio. However, I found the choice of encoder made a HUGE difference; I personally used an MPEG-2 encoder that came with Nero.

  4. Great to watch, and very well put together. It represented a nice variety, and was good to see some of the smaller games, eg NT’s “No Children, It’s My Candy”, get some well-deserved recognition. I’m very happy to see two of my games make it in, especially as the footage was recorded so smoothly (I’ve never been able to get smooth video footage before). 🙂

Overall – fantastic job. I’ll certainly be trying out some of the games I’ve not played.

  5. I am deeply honoured to have a place on this list with my game SIDE SADDLE. Thank you very kindly.

… And, never being the sort to pass up a chance for self-promotion, I should note that SIDE SADDLE 2 is currently available at– and that the first person to beat the game wins two fabulous prizes.

  6. Awesome. I love how you’ve listed all of the game names in the video and the URLs in this post. That way I can go play a game that I think looks good without having to painfully guess what the game might be called or go searching the internet for it.

Happy new year!
