Add your location to a world map of GMC members

James Rhodes of has created a map on which GMC forum members can indicate their geographic location.

You may like to add yourself or see what other users are from your neck of the woods, although the service has only just started so very few members are currently plotted.

Game Maker does have a global reach but the GMC, as you would expect, appears to be most popular in predominately English speaking countries and in the Netherlands where the software originated. Β  I am pleased to see that James Rhodes has taken on board many of my suggestions regarding his idea. Β Details of non-English Game Maker Community alternatives can be found here.

What do you think?

  1. But he’s a few years older then me – so, I wouldn’t have known. πŸ˜›
    It’s a big school.

This has kinda gone a tad off topic (or does it count as on topic Phil? πŸ˜› )

  2. I should shouldn’t I Broxter? hahah
One of my friends pointed out that his brother is in my ICT class.
And I had no idea that he… was him (I did see him today).

Just so that EVERYONE knows now. πŸ˜›
(I find this all very weird in someway)

  3. Lara?! Woah. James, you live MUCH closer to me then I thought πŸ˜› .
I didn’t know that there was anyone who knew how to do…almost anything with computers who lived around here πŸ˜‰ .

  4. Technically, the location isn’t even stored in the database, only the longitude and latitude are. There’s no way to know how accurate each of these figures are, even for me. There shouldn’t really be a concern about people putting their location on the map, because unless you specify accuracy greater than the default, it’ll narrow down to the nearest major city (in my case, it detected Melbourne rather than Lara).

  5. I am saddened but not surprised that the topic was closed. I am sure one reason the moderators will give is that people (particularly minors at the GMC) should not be disclosing their location on a map – although according to the positioning of my IP address I live in the middle of a railway line! I do agree that this website was much better than the many 3 member 2 posts forums that are allowed simply because they contain 1 Game Maker example.

  6. The GMC topic has been locked now. A shame. I think the rules regarding website announcements should be changed from “needing some form of Game Maker content” to something like “needing something that is of possible interest of GMC users” – I liked the idea of the map, and the GMC moderators even removed its link.
