2DCube Wins YoYo Games’ Fifth Competition

Jesse Venbrux (2DCube) has won first place, and the $1000 cash prize, with his platform game They Need to be Fed in YoYo Games’ fifth handheld games themed competition.

The contest which was open from the end of 2009 to March 30th this year attracted 489 entries. After all the games had been played by the YoYo team 67 were put through to the second round and the elimination process continued until the three prize winning games were picked from a top 15.

Second place, and $500, was awarded to LiamBarden’s Ninjammin Beat-jitsu whilst Nimbus Sky Princess by SwordsaintKyo scooped third place and $250.  These games were the first Game Maker creations uploaded by their creators to their YoYo Games accounts.

Of the winning titles only the third-placed game can currently be played using YoYo Game’s Instant Play feature – I presume the creators of the second and first placed entries will re-upload them to take advantage of the recent Game Maker 8 Instant Play bug fix and added Chrome compatibility.

Also none of YoYo Games’ favourites were included in the recent videos of competition entries by GMVision or Big Machine. What do the community know eh? I certainly know I wouldn’t have the patience!

What do you think?

  1. NessXX :I am kinda confused by the fact that Awesome Getaway became a Runners-Up.Don’t get me wrong, its a fun game. But it have a online highscore. O_OAnd how does that work with the psp? Well, i hope sandy will find out.
    Well graz 2 2dcube.

Have you considered the possibility that Awesome Gateway might have won or placed in the money, but for the online highscore?

Zoo 3d was there i think

  3. Congratulations to 2DCube. I was, however, appalled by some of the runners up. The game I was suprise didn’t even make runner up was Cowboy Killa by Banov.

  4. I don’t disagree with the winners, but the list of runners-up is simply ridiculous. So, so ridiculous; some of those games are awful. And, once again, so many great games simply tossed aside. I feel sorry for all the developers of those great games, who I can remember off the top of my head. I would like to see what exactly goes on in YoYo Games’ minds…

But ah well; can’t say I didn’t expect this. Bring on Comp06!

  5. I tried 2Dcube’s game a while back, and I didn’t like it. I’m kind of surprised that he won again (Maybe give other people a chance?). They should have more of a community voting system for the games, rather than just a couple of judges playing them and setting down a number.

But overall, it was another great competition and I hope that there is a new one soon 🙂

      Huh? Online highscores?

The only way it could be done is through MPlay, which means the developer is running another GM server on his end just for highscores. Otherwise, it should have been DQ’d.
