YoYo Games speak out about Pirates

People who pirate Game Maker are not welcome at YoYoGames.com. That is the message given by Sandy and Mark Overmars in a post on the YoYo Games blog earlier today.

Previously Sandy had said “The money we make helps to pay the bills, so buying Game Maker 8 whether you bought GM5 and have upgraded twice for nothing, ripped off GM7, paid for GM7 on or before December 31st, run a crack of GM6 or GM7 that you never paid for, or are just NEW round here and want the latest version…you are all part of the community and we would REALLY welcome $25 from you if you want to use the full version of Game Maker 8.”

Sandy also revealed that 90% of the company’s income comes from people upgrading their copy of Game Maker and justified the use of Softwrap through its low cost which works in the vast majority of cases.

What do you think?

  1. I think this is stupid.
All they say is bullshit. Company don’t make that much profit with product upgrade. Fuck you Yoyo, don’t think i’m ignorant. Hey! I have my license of Game Maker since version 5. Why I should pay again? I used this program so many times, I already proved my royalty to them. It’s sure, one day they will die if they continue like this. After 17 years of experience, I know what I say. If they think I will give money for this upgrade! The program is the same. If one day they really improve it, I will pay. But 8 is the 7, with news and speed. Wow! Really! Good job!
    Long live to cracks!

  2. Mcoot :Well, msr, tell me, what other choice did YYG have? If they released it with softwrap without a poll, people would complain that they lied about keeping softwrap out. If they waited 4 months, people would complain about the wait. If they gave a poll but DIDN’T say that non-softwrap would take longer, people would complain about being tricked into voting for a YYG DRM. So instead, they gave us a poll and told us the truth.

Why I don’t know, it’s not like they didn’t know about this ahead of time. Any businessman could tell you that you plan ahead if you want to get ahead.

  3. Probably someday, someone smart enough will be able to come up with an anti piracy method for software licensing that’s uncrackable?

  4. msr :Here’s my point of view on the whole thing- I skipped GM7 because the features were just not that compelling. I’m glad because nothing about it has shown me I wouldn’t have regretted upgrading, and at the time the system requirements for GM7 games were pretty absurd. I think I’m going to be upgrading to GM8, because the combined features of GM7 and GM8 are actually pretty compelling, but it’s the same as last time, if I had upgraded to 7, there are only like 2 or 3 new features for version 8. It’s pathetic, really. And if I have even one problem with softwrap, I’m going to crack it. I won’t let my work suffer because of a crappy DRM implementation.
Yoyogames gave us those two options because they knew which one we would pick. I don’t believe they ever had any intention of developing a new DRM or sales website, and I don’t think they would be capable of doing it even if they had wanted to. So far, they haven’t really implemented anything that Mark couldn’t have done by himself, except maybe instant play, which is pretty sad.

2 or 3 more options to pay for is more money for a person who created a brilliant program that keeps 1000s of ppl ammused every day.. i think its worth it. its simple if they dont make money they stop making the program, because the work doesnt justify the profit. i mean seriously its like 30 dollars…

  7. wow, something is wrong here. 90% of yoyo’s revenue is from gm pro users. WoW. I thought they were the new newgrounds/youtube for indie games. They need to use that potential and take over the world!

LOL, and we can be lead with the gm-smileys on our clothing.
