Mid-week Community Links: GMC Game Jam, Mac App Store

GMC Game Jam

  • A GMC Game Jam has been proposed. What started off as a discussion regarding the creation of a “GMC Competition” with large cash prizes has now morphed into planning a GMC Jam similar to Ludum Dare and GameJolt’s Jams.
  • Apple’s Mac App Store launches later today.  I have received a tip that some of Jesse Venbrux’s games (Frozzd and You Probably Won’t Make It) are to be sold through the store when it first launches. It will be interesting to see what pricing model is chosen for casual games on Macs.

    They’re sold for a dollar.

I think the jam is a great idea (Mostly because I proposed it… based off of Game Jolt’s Jams.) and would get the community to design as a whole.

It’ll be interesting to see if this hurts Valve’s efforts with the Mac version of Steam (if larger games get on board with it).

Kinda funny how Valve spent so much time and effort getting a Mac version out, only to be undercut by Apple themselves.

Yeah, Valve may as well not bother now…

I don’t think Valve has much to worry about in terms of Steam, considering that Steam is more than just a storefront but also contains functionality like achievements, friends, voice chat, etc. which the Mac store just isn’t designed to do (since it’s designed for applications, not specifically games).

I like the Jam idea and I would definitely participate in something like that if I still used GM.
