GameMaker Scope Magazine reaches a new level of professionality

The recently launched GameMaker Scope Magazine (previously GameMaker Magazine) has been getting more professional issue by issue. But their new “hiring” post in the GMC indicates otherwise.

The post lists positions available as usual, with an application template, with some odd bits, such as “1. All conversations and organizing will be done over the forums and if applicable, MSN/Yahoo IM.”. Nothing much here, until we hit their “news update”:

In most recent events of GMS, 3 GameMaker Scope Magazine staff members have now been layed [sic] off, cut, sacked, fired, No matter what you want to call it, they have been removed from the GameMaker Scope Magazine team. These members include:
Broxter: The now-former editor. Some may be shocked by this, others may have expected it. The truth is, he did much work on issue3-4, two issues; then he somewhat slipped up, and this is where he started working on his YYG’s #3 composition entry. This would be fine, if he had of submitted more work to me, I mean, one piece of work is hardly enough. Then Broxter started with this thing where he was talking about other staff members behind their backs, insulting myself, in some sick ways and also saying that he is going to come and take my Girlfriend away and have […Not too sure if I am actually aloud to say this on this forum, but if I’m not, please blank that word out Mod’s …] Sex with her. I really could not care less if it was a joke; it very much insulted and offended me.
Then, he has really started to get into these rage-type e-mails, where he seems very angry, also not completing work by the set date. So, he is now gone from the team.

And this continues with 2 other staff members being “layed” off. I think that NPT’s (also, thanks to him for sending me a PM about this in the first place) reply to this post sums this up more nicely than I could:

Do you honestly think you are going to get anybody to contribute to your magazine, knowing that if things don’t work out, you’re going to publicly smear them. You have absolutely no class.

You should probably add another important qualification to people consider helping you:

Must be willing to cater to the whim of an adolescent control freak.

What do you think?

  1. I do agree with what some people have said here.
Gmjab, Yeah, maybe Dismissed is a better word, then the one that I used.

Tuntis, I do actually agree with very much of what you say – Strangely enough, I didn’t think all that much of you a while ago. 😛
He actuly does have some very good conter aposiles, though some people call them ‘garbage’.

“And Matthew… tuntis isnt on your side.. he simply doesn’t blindly support Broxter.”
And lastly, yeah, Eyas, I don’t think so much that he is on my side, I just couldn’t think of a better word or way to say it.

“I love train wrecks. They are so right. You can’t just look away.”
    haha.

    -Matt

  2. “Woah! what is going on here… tuntis, it’s about time you were banned from this site. Seriously someone must be paying you to write garbage. And now… I await a nice reply from tuntis calling me a retard.”

I don’t think that the word “retarded” is enough to describe the stupidity of your comment.

“Now I’m not saying I support Broxter, rather I’m just stating you cannot trust anyone’s word over the internet because anyone can make up anything.”

Yes, just as Broxter could be lying if he would deny Matthew_H’s accusations. Your point being?

“Aside from that issue, I think saying that this person was fired for that… and this person for this… is quite low also. For example, if you worked for a shop and you got fired for whatever reason, how would you like it if the shop owner got on their PA system and announced to all staff and customers that Mr. did this and that and now he is fired!? It is quite rude, wouldn’t you agree?”

I just love comparisons like this. Of course the shop owner wouldn’t get “on their PA system and announce to all staff and customers that he did that and that”. Unfortunately, Matthew_H did.

But let’s assume that you would be working for a major news publication. You decide to make fun of your co-workers by making rude jokes and (joke) threats to rape their wives. If you’d get fired and try to join another publication, do you really think that your previous employer wouldn’t have passed the word to prevent anybody sane from hiring a prick like you? I wouldn’t even consider “hiring” Broxter before this “issue” is cleared up, if at all. Then again, GMTech seems to be really great at recruiting anybody who can fire up Word and type gibberish in it!

“So say what you said about firing a person openly is very rude. It’s a very cheap way to say “I got rid of him because he wasn’t good enough, so that makes me(company owner) an excellent boss”. Very cheap, very rude and a surefire way to run your business into the ground.”

Wow, I actually agree with something you’ve said.

“Where is tuntis…?? Ah… he must be practicing making up trash. LOL, it’s funny how you added your own words into that quote.”

I guess you’ve already practiced writing inane gibberish to the max, judging by your comment.

  3. Woah! what is going on here… tuntis, it’s about time you were banned from this site. Seriously someone must be paying you to write garbage. And now… I await a nice reply from tuntis calling me a retard.

Anyway, do Mattthew_H and Broxter live close by? If not, I doubt Broxter would know pretty much nothing about your girlfriend unless for some strange reason you gave him her details.

If what Broxter said were true, while what he said is very insulting and quite low I would think it is just something he would have said in anger but didn’t really mean it. I think it would be stupid to deny Broxter from join any sort of group just because someone said he said something. Mattthew_H can say that he did say it a gazillion times, but without evidence his word means nothing.

Now I’m not saying I support Broxter, rather I’m just stating you cannot trust anyone’s word over the internet because anyone can make up anything.

Aside from that issue, I think saying that this person was fired for that… and this person for this… is quite low also. If you want to improve, loss the word “fired!” because he was never employed in the first place. Rather “dismissed” is much more appropriate as it takes the work’s feelings to heart after losing his position.

Where is tuntis…?? Ah… he must be practicing making up trash. LOL, it’s funny how you added your own words into that quote.

  4. Chill, people! All tuntis said was that he felt its unwise to hire someone with such a bad “record” . Gamez made a very respectful and valid reply, and the conversation continued in a regular manner. I dont see how we should suddenly jump to the conclusion that tuntis posts crap or that he should be banned!

And Matthew… tuntis isnt on your side.. he simply doesn’t blindly support Broxter.

  5. I don’t think girlfriends or any other aspect of a GM user’s personal life should ever really creep into their online conversations. It’s all completely irrelevant.

  6. Russel: Or perhaps it’s a case of Broxter simply ignoring Matthew’s accusations because they’re true. Either way, I don’t know about you, but if somebody would claim that I told them I’d “take away their girlfriend”, I would dispute their claim.

  7. Tuntis– perhaps it’s a case of Broxter simply deciding that Matthew’s accusations do not dignify a response; at any rate, nowhere in Matthew’s comments did the word “rape” appear. I took his accusation not to mean that Broxter would abduct Matthew’s girlfriend– if she indeed exists– and assault her but rather that Broxter was somehow plotting to woo her away from Matthew.

Either way, I think it’s less that Broxter is in agreement with Matthew’s charges and more that the charges, as espoused by Matthew, are ridiculous on their face.

  8. @tuntis – I am not really going to start a long chain of comments about this. I am happy to talk to him and find out what really happened (if he is at all interested in working with GMTech), Broxter may have said it – however until he says he has or hasn’t, then we have only heard one side of the ‘arguement’.

  9. I thought that I might as well post a comment.
He did say that he will, I wouldn’t lie about such a thing, and that he has not denied it, may give some evidence to you that he did in fact say it.

And yes F1ak3r, I do have a Girlfriend, thanks.

But I really could not care less about what he does next, whether with GMTM or GM Weekly.
Also thanks Tuntis, it kind of helped knowing that someone was on my side for a tiny bit of this – If he is on my side about….Well, yeah 😛

Also, if any of you do not believe that some of the things that had happened with Broxter, and believe that I am just a simple lair, then you can even ask Phil Gamble – He may say something about what of ‘some’ of the things that had happened.
Also AfroThunder, as he is known on the GMC has also known some about this before he had been ‘fired’.

Still, I have no real idea on why you think GMS will ‘crash and burn’ Broxter. I will try my hardest to keep it going and publishing issues – How ever long they may take to write.

    -Matt

  10. @gamez93: And has Broxter even tried to deny these accusations? No. Instead, he just posted a comment agreeing that “GMS lacks professionalism”, and goes on to claim that “GMS will now crash and burn”.

    Sorry, you lose.

  11. @tuntis – Have you got in contact with Broxter and found out if that was exactly true. I asked him to contact me if he was interested in joining, if he did, I would have discussed with him about what happened at GMS (what went wrong, why Matt ‘fired’ him etc). Just because Matt said that along with other comments about other ex-team members, it doesn’t mean it was true.

  12. Yeah! I was actually thinking about signing up, but with me being a former editor of GMS, I thought you may refuse me.
I’ve got a few ideas of things I could do for you.
Though, I am actually joining up with GMWeekly, but it can be a small ‘job’ with GMT.

Matt is so gonna regret sacking me. 😀

  13. Did we honestly need to know that he wanted to have sex with your girlfriend. Couldn’t you just sum it up by saying for personal reasons and for lack of support. Rather than give us a childish reason. (This is directed towards Matt)

  14. Not to get too political or America-centric here, but: George W. Bush has been President for eight years. There are many who feel he is not capable of leading the United States.

It’s not a question of what one’s “job” or “position” is; it’s what they do with it. It’s how they respond to criticism, it’s how they deal with other persons on their team both in private and, perhaps more tellingly, in public, and it’s what they accomplish.

While your spelling and grammar has gotten better over the last few issues, you still write articles that, frankly, make no sense and are full of factual errors. And when called out on this– as in the comments thread http://gamemakerblog.com/2008/09/05/gamemaker-magazine-becomes-gamemaker-scope-magazine/ , you try to deflect that criticism with inane nonsequitors. Then you air out your dirty laundry in public.

By any litmus, just from watching from over here, at the sidelines, that’s a failure to lead. That being said, I don’t work for your magazine, and perhaps things are different on the inside.

At any rate, I hope you continue to run your magazine, I hope that your content continues to improve, and I hope that you learn that real leadership isn’t about being in charge; it’s about being responsible.

  15. I won’t be ever joining GMS again. A complete lack of professionalism. Matt obviously is not capable of leading this magazine. I will now be put my effort elsewhere. 😐

    I wholly agree with NPT.

  16. How am I not capable of leading the magazine Broxter?
I really don’t understand as I have lead it right from issue 1.

    -Matt

  17. Sure put a smile on my face!

Loving some of the mistakes in it, one of which suggests YYG are getting members to work on music…

I won’t be jumping ship from my GMTech position any time soon.

  18. Bwahahahahaha. Bwahahahahaha.

    ::gasp, wheeze::

    Oh God… can’t breathe…

This can’t be for real. I’m convinced that Broxter and Matthew_H have in fact created a Dadaist comedy routine in the style of Andy Kaufman or Albert Brooks. And I think they took it too far; the style of writing and behaviour the venerable Mr. _H uses is too over-the-top to be taken seriously: they should have tried something slightly more subtle. But the parenthetical bit advising the mods to delete a perfectly normal and natural word– that’s so funny it doesn’t matter that the rest of it isn’t quite believable.

So, it’s comedy, posted for our benefit.

That’s the only possible rational explanation for this, and I thank them for providing us with such comedy gold.
