$1000 YoYo Games Steam Competitions Announced

After hints of upcoming official GameMaker competitions and the recent addition of Steam Workshop support, YoYo Games have announced three competitions in collaboration with Valve. The series of competitions, to be held between October and December, will award USD $1000 to the sole winner of each event.

To enter, developers must upload their GameMaker games to Steam Workshop. Entries can be made using any version of GameMaker: Studio and should be tagged with “YoYoCompOct2012.”  The October competition has already started, and will run between the 9th-31st October 2012. The competition appears to have no theme, and indeed the rules don’t state that entries even have to be made within the month. This may deter developers that are hoping to find an actual competitive element within the competition.

A rule that stands out is the requirement to be aged 18 or over to be eligible to enter, which may be problematic for the many young developers within the GameMaker community.

  1. xot :Please encourage all of your friends to boycott the competition. I feel it will improve my chances of winning. Thanks.

    Sounds like a good strategy.
I will do like True Valhalla.

  2. True Valhalla :Maybe we’ll see Death Worm in the October comp, Karoshi in the November comp, and Iji in the December comp!
There’s just no competition here, it seems like a grab for games with no regard for the developer’s enjoyment. And that’s worrying to me.

For this same reason, I’m not entering.

I absolutely agree True Valhalla. Games should be done within a time period, not just submiting games done 2 years ago.

  4. Seems pretty unlikely that you stand a chance in the competition if you only use that one month. Perhaps it would be a good idea to start a game now for the December competition.

    • One might rush a game for the October contest, in the hopes that the competition will be weaker during the first month…
