GMTV now part of GMking

GMTVStarting today, Game Maker TV (GMTV) will be joining the GMking network of sites and services. The name “GMTV” will be kept, and Dan “Danny” Eggers will continue to act as the Executive Editor of the popular Game Maker video podcast.

As part of the agreement, GMking will provide resources and services to GMTV necessary to continue and improve upon their core goal: providing high quality, information-rich, audio-visual media to the Game Maker community. Additionally, some of the writers from the popular MarkUp Magazine, also produced by GMking, will be assisting in the writing and production of future GMTV episodes.

GMTV will complement and expand GMking’s services to the Game Maker community as well, making this a relationship that is truly beneficial to both sides.

Robin Monks, who represented GMking for the negotiations for this merger stated, “I think this will benefit the entire Game Maker community. By uniting forces, the newly expanded GMking Network will be able to produce even more content tailored to the Game Maker community.”

GMking is a thriving community of volunteers who produce content for indie game developers and users. GMking has served the game development community since 2004; and continues to produce relevant, quality material to educate and inform.

GMTV is a fast moving and informative Game Maker video podcast with a focus on producing quality content for users of the popular Game Maker game creation platform.

  1. […] network, announced shortly after the release of GMTV episode 4 in July last year, the move was controversial especially with those at GMTech.  Only one episode of GMTV has been released in the nine months […]

  2. gamez93 says:

I was just clearing up with Danny what I actually said. What I said in my first comment was what does GMTV gain, and you answered that. That is all.

  3. gamez93 says:

I don’t really want to merge with a TV show. I have a magazine, I don’t see much that I can do with your show. I am not saying you should merge with me – I was just questioning what your gain by merging with GMKing. This has nothing to do with GMTech, I am just a normal person wanting to know if you really gain anything.

BTW: You asked we after this merge. You said it was between me and GMKing. I said I probably would of said yes, but don’t see I can offer you much.

  4. Eyas Sharaiha says:

If extremely enhanced hosting, writing, encoding, and project organization is not enough a gain, I dont know what is.

  5. gamez93 says:

Thank you for your comments. I didn’t want any articles on the GMPedia website, because they were on the GMTech wiki. I would rather keep the majority of the articles there. But we have already discussed all that.

I would truly like to see GMTV get better, but without anything related to GMKing slapped on as well. The sticker in the corner and the ‘GMKing presents’, since your just out to help get it better – why have those.

If you read my first comment there was ‘I’ several times in it, it is my personal opininon on the matter. Tuntis (who seems to always want to disagree) replied, so I replied to his comment. That is all, I have to do with this.

  6. tuntis says:

“But I do care about how GMKing goes about their business the wrong way.”

Uh… Congrats, you care about the “merge in general” too! If GMking’s “going about their business the wrong way [with GMTV]”, it’s pretty much related to the “merge in general”. No?

“…. it benefits GMKing on the most part because not only have they scored 1) a new service 2) new traffic the have also removed competition for themselves.”

Congrats. You’ve just taken your first glance at a new world called real life where the word competition means something. This stuff happens. Have fun living in your fantasy utopia where everything’s the way you want it to be.

“And I guess you are still looking in the dictionary to find out what the mean of the work “similar” is?”

Now this is going to the direction of word nazism? Your argument is still flawed.

“Similar” means having a “likeness” or “resemblance”. I guess “online show” is a perfect “resemblance” that fits both to the audcast and GMTV. But they’re still in a completely different form of media. Here is a hint: your argument is invalid, once again.

“By now I know you have nothing better to do…”

Gee, take that tuntis! Yeah, I’d rather be watching Psych instead of having Thunderbird nag me every 5 minutes you write yet another argument against me. I could shut it off – but I need to know when my life is crap. (PS. yeah, that’s not a picture of Thunderbird, at that time I was using another mail client)

  7. gamez93 says:

I am going to make my point clearer. I personally don’t see a point in the merge, except from GMKing gaining extra advertising. There are several other ways to get hosting, writers and whatever without merging with GMKing.

That is my opinion, which is why I posted it. You clearly have different views and that is fine.

BTW: You said ‘technical issues, such as hosting’ – Which is why I commented on hosting.

  8. gmjab says:

It’s time you bought some glasses, you can’t seam to read my posts.

“So why are you writing an huge failure that you call an “argument” over it, then?” Because if you read my first post you would have read that I don’t care about the merge in general. But I do care about how “GMKing goes about their business the wrong way.”.

“When did I ever claim so, Mr. Caps Lock? I was merely pointing out how GMTV profits from this arrangement. I never claimed that this wouldn’t benefit GMking: it benefits both.” …. it benefits GMKing on the most part because not only have they scored 1) a new service 2) new traffic the have also removed competition for themselves. Merging is cheap way to say “I’m the best now”.

“You seem like you don’t even know what a podcast is. …. (I guess you missed the difference between “sound” and “video” in school). Why doesn’t it need another similar service? Having an “online radio show” combined with an “online “TV” show” is great.” And I guess you are still looking in the dictionary to find out what the mean of the work “similar” is? Here is a hint: Before you make comment, READ the post and open a dictionary if you don’t know what the little words mean.

By now I know you have nothing better to do…

  9. tuntis says:

“All I did was reply to your post, and picked out the two examples you posted.”

Yes. Examples: More specifically, I also mentioned “technical assistance”. I later mentioned how GMking can obviously help in other aspects too. What does it matter – I already responded to you. Apparently I’m not going to receive a response myself.

“What are you talking about, I asked ‘What is the point of the merge?’ and you replied with some examples. Those are the only things I commented on. I am not “pissed off”, I speak to Danny most of the time, if I wanted to merge with him – I could of asked.”

There’s some sort of problem here. You see, the thing is, you even fail to realize what the merge obviously benefits. You have a problem with the merge. I’ve totally figured it all out, I’m a genius!

  10. gamez93 says:

“you are taking things out of my original arguments in a futile attempt to make them void.”

I asked how merging will help GMTV, you replied with hosting and writers. I replied by saying what I thought about these things that GMKing were offering. All I did was reply to your post, and picked out the two examples you posted. Hosting and writers.

“You’re either really stupid or are intentionally ignoring everything I’m saying by backfiring invalid arguments because you’re pissed off your little establishment called GMTech doesn’t get a cut. Go away.”

What are you talking about, I asked ‘What is the point of the merge?’ and you replied with some examples. Those are the only things I commented on. I am not “pissed off”, I speak to Danny most of the time, if I wanted to merge with him – I could of asked.

GMKing has merged with another service in order to gain more popularity on the GM scene.

  11. tuntis says:

“If you read my post correctly you would have seen that I do not care that this has happend…”

So why are you writing an huge failure that you call an “argument” over it, then?

“We had our opportunity to merge with GMTV back when GMTV began but we decided it would be best that we remain separate.”

I’m pretty sure anybody wouldn’t have wanted to merge with them back then (no offense, Danny).

“YOU tell me how this will benefit GMTV and NOT GMKING?”

When did I ever claim so, Mr. Caps Lock? I was merely pointing out how GMTV profits from this arrangement. I never claimed that this wouldn’t benefit GMking: it benefits both.

“GMKing has it’s own podcast service… why does it need another similar service?”

You seem like you don’t even know what a podcast is. GMking’s “podcast service” is in the form of audio. GMTV is audiovisual. (I guess you missed the difference between “sound” and “video” in school). Why doesn’t it need another similar service? Having an “online radio show” combined with an “online “TV” show” is great.

“Also Danny doesn’t need your writers he can get his own.”

We’ll let Danny decide “whose writers” he wants. And I already stated above that from what I’ve seen, he’s had trouble finding staff.

By now I’m pretty sure you are a jealous prick.

  12. gmjab says:

To start off with I’m not a “jealous prick”. If you read my post correctly you would have seen that I do not care that this has happend… or maybe you need to learn the meaning of ‘jealous’ again(I guess you missed that part in school). . Stop your name calling as it will get you nowhere. We had our opportunity to merge with GMTV back when GMTV began but we decided it would be best that we remain separate.

I think Danny has done an excellent job with GMTV. He doesn’t need GMking to make it better. I’ve talked with Danny countless times and he is quite capable of doing this by himself. YOU tell me how this will benefit GMTV and NOT GMKING? This isn’t about GMTV it’s about GMKing and how GMKing can make itself better. If there were no benifits in merging with GMTV for GMKing would the merge have happend? NO!. Also Danny doesn’t need your writers he can get his own. GMKing has it’s own podcast service… why does it need another similar service?

Yes the GMKing sticker… “ohhh looky looky GMKing supports GMTV… I love them now.. lets join GMKing” … thats what the aim of the sticker is to gather members for GMKing and to boost site popularity.

    gmjab

  13. tuntis says:

You’re such an arrogant prick you fail to see my points. From what I’ve gathered, during GMTV’s lifetime, they’ve had trouble recruiting new staff. Hosting was just one single example: you are taking things out of my original arguments in a futile attempt to make them void.

Assistance in writing & other production. Technical assistance. Being able to reach to a bigger audience by being advertised by one of the major “players”.

You’re either really stupid or are intentionally ignoring everything I’m saying by backfiring invalid arguments because you’re pissed off your little establishment called GMTech doesn’t get a cut. Go away.

  14. gamez93 says:

Writers – You don’t need to merge with GMKing to get writers. If they really wanted to help, they could do that when their not working on articles for the magazine.

Hosting – Do you really need to merge with GMKing to get hosting. There are many hosts out there that can be used by them, and in fact GMTV are still using one them for the website.

So again, what are they really gaining from this merge? I personally just see it as some advertising for GMKing and one less thing to try to compete with.

  15. tuntis says:

“If your saying ‘the only thing that’s different is the GMking sticker’. What is the point of the merge?”

My point on that was how gmja– the jealous prick was that “nothing’s going to screw GMTV over”. Obviously things are going to change: and in the positive direction.

GMking has loads of excellent writers (no, I’m not talking about myself, because I’m not 1) part of them anymore 2) my reviews were horrible) that will collaborate with the GMTV staff on writing episodes. GMking’s experienced staff will obviously also help with technical issues, such as hosting.

In overall, those two points may not sound as much when on paper, but think of how much it will help when making episode 5 (and further episodes).

Do you still seriously think this “merger is useless”?

  16. gamez93 says:

I doubt he is a ‘jealous prick’. GMKing (Robin and whoever else was involved) had discussions with him and convince him it was the best possible move.

I don’t really see what GMKing can offer GMTV. It will be great to know exactly what Danny gets out of this move. If your saying ‘the only thing that’s different is the GMking sticker’. What is the point of the merge?

    Make up your mind about.

  17. tuntis says:

User choice? It’s not like GMking forces GMTV to do anything: they still have their own website, the staff is the same: the only thing that’s different is the GMking sticker.

GMTV joining GMking or GMTech would probably do exactly the same: allow them to make better content and have more resources to use. You’re just an jealous prick.

  18. Danny says:

I should also state that it was my idea to merge. We could gain staff, but staff is staff it doesn’t do any good if they write like shit and take weeks to send a half of a page script. Merging with GMKing will give us both talanted and dedicated writers and maybe even help us gain some popularity. I may also want to add that, gamez when I told you I was gonna ask you to merge you said you were going to say yes. Yet you say the merge benefits nothing, whats the difference if I would have chose the merge with you? Not trying to make an argument, just asking. And yeah I told Eyas I could add some extra Mark up and other GMKing related advertisements yet her refused. Keep in mind everyone has an equal opportunity to get an ad. I don’t see how slapping on a GMKing sticker will make the show any worse, thats the exchange for them giving us the hosting, script writers, and other support that may be needed.

    Danny

  19. gmjab says:

GMKing consumes yet another external Game Maker service removing user choice. I’m neither surprised nor angry of this. While this move serves to only make GMKing better and make it self bigger I think GMKing goes about their business the wrong way.

You see… GMKing seams to always try to merge a service into themselves if that other service becomes popular. By doing this it removes competition while bringing yet more people to themselves and making GMKing more popular. It’s a smart move but It completely removes user choice and it removes earnt popularity. This is why GMTECH always denies the invitations we receive from GMKing, we want to remain separate and different. The videos will now have slapped on them a GMKing sticker, then filled with yet more advertising about their own services.

GMTV will not be the same again (Don’t reply saying ‘no’ here because that fact is, is that it WILL NEVER be the same) GMTV has now lost their earnt popularity and will now live on the popularity of GMKing.

Really, I knew this was going to happen after the second episode was released, it was just a matter of time before GMking snatched up another home made service.

  20. Eyas Sharaiha says:

    Agreed.

Well you know what, if you dont like having “GMking.org Presents” in the beginning of videos. How about we dont? A link in the corner of GMTV’s website will do good.

As for the wiki, you have your own reasons and I repsect those and understand them as well. I wanted to make it clear to people like gmjab that we are not a service that is out there to merge with others (i.e. we are not out to merge with the GMT wiki, etc.), and I used a couple of [valid] ad hominum statements to clarify and support my point.

And just a side note: dont let the fact that GMking.org running GMTV stop you from submitting any GMTech or GMTech-related ads there as well.

  21. Eyas Sharaiha says:

Hey, this is getting out of control. FIRST OF ALL, Will GMTV change? Hell yes: they will have more reviewers and writers, they will have robin and myself at their disposal for hosting and code, they will provide a much better service IN THE WAY THEY WANT.

Second of all, will there be a GMking.org sticker? If a “GMking.org Presents GMTV” is really an act of removing user choice, then someone misunderstands the whole concept of user choice obviously. We can either create our own TV service as we have been asked to do numerous times, or we can help support a good one that we personally like and think it has room for improvement. How are we removing user choice?

Not sure what’s going on, but I explicitly made it clear to Danny when we were talking about the issue that I do not want any extra advertising for GMking.org nor any bias, and he can vouch for that. Instead, we will connect GMTV with other services where it makes sense (and for you, GMTech, you could know that GMTV will not promote MarkUp in any way other than normal advertising, an option still open to GMTech themselves.. just FYI), this means that if there’s a big script of code which danny might need to read out loud and noone will listen to, we’ll have a link to a proper page on the network instead, etc. This will enhance GMTV not cripple it.

And gmjab, PLEASE “This is why GMTECH always denies the invitations we receive from GMKing”

    ALWAYS DENIES?

We made one invitation, and that was to merge MU with GMTech more than a year ago. The invitation wasn’t restricted in any way and you know it. And, you didn’t turn it down, you gave us a counter-deal with your own terms and asked us if we would agree instead, we ended up not agreeing.

I recently asked gamez if we he wouldn’t mind having GMTech articles on GMpedia.org (this means, having a GMTech section on GMpedia that links to your site, etc, and have sub-articles in that section belonging to GMTech). I wouldn’t call that an invitation to a merge at all. The answer I got from such a request is that the license permits it, but that GMTech wishes not to affiliate with GMking.org in any way — and I respected those wishes.

Now, you think that GMking merging with other services is a bad thing for the community because it hurts user choice. First of all let me remind you that the choice for a TV service of GMTV has always been a “limited, single choice” — it has always been GMTV alone, we’re not limiting it any further.

As when it comes to merging with GMKB for instance, I think we’re needless to say that we got a thankyou from nickydude for proposing to handle the GMKB articles and he was very excited about the idea himself.

Now, you might think: Hey, they’re limiting choice now, there was GMKB and GMpedia.org, and now there’s just GMpedia.

Well, that doesn’t hurt the community. What would you rather have: two, separate, average quality, incomplete services OR one good, complete, and beneficial service? We care about this community and are acting accordingly. On the other hand, what you are doing (though you might not realize it) is that you’re crippling the full potential of good community services. “We dont want GMpedia (an excellent GM wiki) to have our articles and provide a complete service, because GMpedia is part of GMking which we compete with.” Well, my friend, we’d rather help the community and deal with our competitors than harm the community by shining as a solo service.

I’m not asking more people to merge with GMking; I do not want that to begin with! But I hate it when people accuse that GMking does this for its own good only. I mean: GMking.org is a non-profit, time consuming project that is very tiring and exhausting to handle. I gain absolutely nothing from it but a couple of simple thank yous. I never criticized the fact that GMTech charges for their advertisements or anything (although, you might want to check the Creative Commons license you use), but accusing me and my friends that we are working on GMking.org for our own good is just WRONG. We consume our time, money, and most importantly: energy, into this. And “this” doesn’t mean “making GMking.org popular” — why would I Care about that?? We consume our resources for the community; because I’ve been one a GM developer who needed resources and have appreciated the scarce resource which I’ve recieved, why can’t I provide dense resources to others like me?

As for gamez93, for saying “what does gmking.org exaclty has to offer/benefit”, I think the offer part was made clear: writers, hosting, resources, and web solutions at times. What does GMking.org have to gain? It becomes a more full rounded service. A service which.. SERVES.. the community. So call us “The GMC’s Microsoft” because we merge with services, help them grow, but remember: unlike monopolies: we provide this for free, and OPEN SOURCE.

  22. NAL says:

I don’t see why any news like this has to generate a huge argument over whether it ws a good move or not. It was GMTV’s choice to accept, and it’ll be them that either lives to regret it or benefit from it.

  23. Phil Gamble says:

I wonder how much this will change the videos.

  24. MMs says:
