Update: GameMaker Studio Standard is now 100% free permanently, click here for more info »
The promotion below has ended
For a limited time, GameMaker Studio Standard edition is available for free. Valued at $49.99, GameMaker Studio Standard is a significant improvement upon the free version of the software which imposes harsh restrictions on the resources that developers can make use of.
Additionally, developers can use their free Standard edition license to upgrade to the Professional edition (RRP $99.99) for only $35 more. This offer ends March 2, 2014.
To take advantage of this offer, download and install GameMaker Studio and follow the instructions that appear. To upgrade from GameMaker Studio Standard to GameMaker Studio Professional for $35, simply enter your Standard license key when checking out. This offer is not being extended to the Steam version.
Due to high demand, the license key may take a while to appear in your email inbox, and there may be delays when trying to validate the key.

Hi Guys
Can you try and organize another offer. I just missed this and have been watching the net and GM website for another special offer and I’m eager to buy.
Mine didn’t go through, and I tried it every day and then it ended. 🙁
Hi guys!
I have been looking around for a while, but I don’t know yet how to get a license for the standard edition. I downloaded free studio edition, but I don’t see where I have to register myself for getting the license.
Any help?
Cheers,
Well I have just seen that it was late for me. I couldn’t find it sooner, and now it’s late.
Never mind I was late, I couldn’t even get past the “input license key” menu. It keep asking me for a license and even though I always choose use free license, it’s just restart and keep asking for a license key (repeat). And now it’s too late…
Quick question. When it says that this’ll end on March 2, as in today, does that mean that this is the last possible day to get it free? Or is this the day when it ISN’T free anymore? I hope it’s the former…
It seems that last day was yesterday. I’m late too.
Hello? I have a two questions.
Question 1. I’ve got Standard license. can I use this code after the event?
Now I have to decide which university is preparing to test. The Roar and the test will end in eight months.
(thanks to Google translate!)
Question 2. Can I use this code another computer?
Uninstall this computer, and Install other computer.
Explanation in Question 2, Both the My Computer.
Hello.
First of all, thanks for the free license key for the Standard version of GMS. I downloaded the installer, registered my e-mail and got my key in seconds. But when I go to: “Help” > “About GameMaker…” it says: “Registered to: None”
Everytime I validate my license key, it says: “Licensed Successfully!”. But, when I restart GMS, it looks like no action has been made; keeps showing: “Registered to: None.”
Need some help with this, please.
Hey guys, I registered like a week ago and I didn’t received any email from you guys. =(
Never Mind. I Found It.
I got the 35$ Pro upgrade. Does it upgrade the standard edition automatically, or do I have to reenter my license code?
I sent the following e-mail, but did not get a license key
This came in the mail once, but why try to remove e-mail, but did not receive.
* I use a translator because there may be an error.
* I am a person of South Korea
Is there anyway I could take advantage of this awesome deal for the middle school computer class I teach? Please feel free to email me to discuss!
Thank you very much for the offer. I knew about the offer through the TouchArcade forums, downloaded the standard version for free and read some of the help files available. After this reading and seeing that Hero Siege was made with GameMaker, I took the step and updated to the Pro version for $35. In the end, I got what seems to be a great game developing platform for $42 ($35 + $7 taxes), and ideal for newbies to programming because it has all the necessary help docs and tutorials inside the app itself, along with helpdesks and forums.
Glad to hear it! 🙂
Just asking but if I make a game with this, do I have to pay fees to you guys and or does most of the money made from selling the game go to me?
It freezes when waiting for program to close for updates. Also cant open it normally, there will just open a window called “” and nothing happens. I have to kill the process via task manager. Therefor I cant register for free version, what to do??
I’m not getting any kind of promt or anything. I downloaded the installer but every time I try to open it it doesn’t do anything. Anyone have any tips or thoughts?
Thank you ! Works great
Is there a mac version? It says yes but not to download.
every time i try to confirm my email address there is a pop up that says DTD is prohibited please help!

Just read through the basic documentation (not advanced sections yet). I cannot seem to find any sprites included for playing around (as mentioned in the documentation). Are these included in this version at all? Do these need to be downloaded separately? Do not see them at location mentioned here either: http://help.yoyogames.com/entries/22018578-Finding-Tutorial-Sprites
Thanks
You can use opengameart.org for free sprites.
The multiframe images are for animated sprites, called sprite sheets. Google “sprite sheets gamemaker”
Thanks
how long will this free version keep running?
A few questions:
1. Can this license be used for re-installation (if needed) after the promotion period is over?
2. Will it be possible to upgrade to professional version for $50 after the promotion period is over?
Thanks
Yes, to both of your questions.
Quite handy. I don’t think YYG ever tested this on a machine with Large Fonts set in Windows, though 🙂
Downloaded it and can’t find option to register email or anything. Starts up and have option to upgrade to standard when I click it opens up window to buy in web store.
I have my Professional license key, but I’m not sure where I am supposed to enter it.
I am having the same problem
I Googled it and it seems you have to start a new project, then click on the ‘help’ tab and near the bottom you will see ‘update license’. You type or paste it in there, then restart.
Hi, i got it now, but where can I get that licence key? thx for help
Wait, I thought Standard Version has unlimited resources as well. Is there something I missed?
It has… What do you mean?
i downloaded and installed and updated in my window xp 32 bit but now gamemaker is not doing anything when i try to open it
So I downloaded the legacy edition of Gamemaker for Mac
Where do I put my email address to get the license – or is this deal only for the game maker studio?
This is great news and great timing! I have one question, though. Does the license work across PCs, or should I grab a license for my home computer and laptop separately?
It works across PCs. That’s the issue I’m having now. I already had standard edition on my computer using a friend’s license and now I can’t seem to get my own.
I’m not getting any kind of prompt. I already had the standard edition installed on my computer when a friend was using it, but I would like my own license. Is there a registry key or something I have to delete to get this to work? I’ve tried uninstalling and installing the free version but still, nothing.
Thanks,
Mike
Hi there,
First off, thanks for the give-away! I’m looking forward to giving Gamemaker a whirl. I’m having a bit of an issue entering the license though. I registered my email, received my license number, and entered it into the text field. However, after I did that, nothing happened. No confirmation or anything, and if I restart, it asks if i’d like to upgrade again. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks again!
Hi, please see above comments addressing this issue.
Is there any way to activate this on Steam? Thanks
Does this work with the Steam edition? I can’t seem to get the license to activate.
What’s going on in terms of the Steam version? I have the code for the standalone, but are we also gonna get a steam key as well to be tied in?
I’ve learned that it takes 24 hours, I just want some confirmation that can I switch from one to the other ASAP.
It’s asking for a license for Studio. What do I enter?
I worked it out. Everything on the registration screen is a mess. I’m guessing because I run my text at 125%?

Hi Gamemaker
thank you for the free license
but changing my computer soon ,
i tried to redeem it on steam but it doesn’t seems to work !!
Any suggestion?
Regards
Te key will not work on Steam.
Okay
Thank you True Valhalla
but i’ve got another question
Is GM tied to the registered mail or the Os?
Registered email. That being said, keep the license code written down somewhere since it’s probably a pain to retrieve once lost/forgotten.
How do you get them to send you the license key? I replied to the email to confirm joining the mailing list, but no license. Then the program crashed and when I started it back up, it said this email has already been used to create a standard license.
Nevermind, it took a half hour or so to send the key out. But be warned, the program will crash a lot while waiting for the key, it did at least on win 8 64 bit for me.
Getting this for free is great, however I was wondering about the license. Do we also get a licence key?
So, I downloaded GameMaker Studio, registered my email address, and have not received a key.
There are currently delays with email registration and key validation. These should subside soon.
Chances of us being able to take advantage of this on the Steam versions? Or getting a Steam key for the software with the purchase of pro?
Unfortunately this offer is not being extended to the Steam version.
Only .exe, nothing free for OSX?
GameMaker Studio only runs on Windows. However, you can easily run it in a VM using Parallels for a seamless experience.
There is also an older version of GameMaker called GameMaker For Mac, but it’s pretty awful. You can find that here: http://www.yoyogames.com/legacy
Thanks for the reply I thought there was a native application for some reason. May give it a go in Virtualbox.
I entered my license key and clicked the green License button, but nothing happened.
There appear to be some delays with the registration due to high demand. It will eventually go through.
How much do we save on the upgrade offer (e.g. what’s the normal upgrade price)?
Standard is usually $50, Pro is usually $100. Upgrading from Standard to Pro is normally $50.
